Use These Long Summer Days To Keep Your Job Search Afloat! - Hire Imaging

Use These Long Summer Days To Keep Your Job Search Afloat! - Hire Imaging June 21st brought us the Summer Solstice, where in the Northern Hemisphere, we experienced the longest day and the shortest night of the year. It also officially marks the beginning of summer. Okay, so the long-awaited lazy days of summer are here. And its wonderful! However, it can spell D-A-N-G-E-R! In my practice, I often hear clients mutter sentiments like, Oh, why bother going full tilt in my job search now? No one is hiring; everyones on vacation or theyre thinking about heading to the golf course or lying by the pool. Is this the attitude that will serve you well? No! Wrong! Yikes! Yes, the summer months tend to slow down a bit for many. Dont get caught up in this way of thinking as a rationalization for taking time off from what should be your full-time job if youre unemployed (and at least 10 hours a week if youre employed). First, people do hire in the summer. Stay focused; and take advantage of this time! Its likely that much of your competition has just the very mentality mentioned above. This gives you an edge if youre on top of things and out there! Continue to search for opportunities; network with colleagues, acquaintances and contacts. Your due diligence cant possibly hurt! You may get more interviews than at other times of the year. In fact, according to many hiring managers and recruiters, the summer is actually one of the best times to look for work. In addition to many job seekers taking that time off (again; big mistake), there is an increase in demand for contract workers to cover vacationing workers. This is a good way to get your foot in the door for a potential full-time opportunity down the road. Secondly, youre ahead of the race. When Labor Day comes around (and your competition is thinking about getting back into the groove), guess who is already out there in full force? Guess whos been networking, setting up interviews, beefing up marketing documents? Yes, indeed; YOU! Now, Im not telling you that you should not have some summer fun a vacation if thats what suits you. The trick is to plan to work your job search and to work your plan! Pace yourself. Here are some tips to maximize your job search success this summer and still have fun: Rise early. With sunrise so early and mornings cooler than afternoons, help yourself to get up earlier. Let the sun shine through your blinds, set an extra alarm, ask someone to wake you up. Its a quiet time of day perfect for doing your internet research, setting your goals and planning your to-do list. It can also be a great time to take a walk, run, listen to birds, have that cup of coffee on the porch, or do whatever energizes you to start your day off right. Make a plan and schedule. Plan to set a schedule for yourself and stick to it. Decide how many hours each day you will devote to the search, whether two or 10 hours. Build your life into it. If you want to go to for a boat ride that evening or work in your flower garden, great! By having a schedule start and quit time, you can be productive in your job search activities without sacrificing your own summer enjoyment. Take advantage of networking opportunities. You will no doubt be outside or headed to new places at this time of the year. Be aware of making contacts wherever and whenever possible. You may be sitting by the city pool and meet someone you havent seen for ages. Thats a new contact! Maximize working in the evening. Maybe you simply arent a morning person. There are advantages to working your job search in the coolness of summer evenings. You will probably have to make compromises. Phone calls and contacts are best handled during the day. However, you can switch your planning, research, résumé tweaking and applications to the evening. And give yourself permission to enjoy an outing or event that takes you away from your usual job search schedule in the summer. Just dont let it be the norm. Your goal is to be productive, guilt free and free of resentment! This is about balance. Work and play! Youll be happy with the results!

My Theme For 2018 Might Be Helpful In Your Life As Well - Kathy Caprino

My Theme For 2018 Might Be Helpful In Your Life As Well Part of Kathys series Finding Brave To Build a Better Life Every year at this time, I love to identify a “theme” for the coming year â€" a word or phrase that represents what I want to cultivate more of in my life, work, relationships, and in the world directly around me. I’ve found that what we focus on truly expands, so focusing on an exciting and meaningful new element in my life brings it closer to me, and in greater abundance. My theme for 2018 is “finding brave.” It’s amazing that, from the minute these two little words came into my sphere (and I thank my dear friend and author Avril McDonald for that), I’ve truly experienced more bravery, resilience, strength and hope, and I can see more clearly how I’m on the Finding Brave path. I remember just when this term was birthed. It was in Mykonos, Greece this past September, while I was co-hosting a women’s retreat Light From the Dawn with Avril, Miisa Mink, Kaisa Peltola, and  Charlotte Gillbanks. For the past year, I had been using the term “Brave Up” extensively in my work, writing, TEDx talk and other places. But in September as I was working on launching my new podcast (hope youll check it out on January 4th), I discovered that someone had trademarked the term. I felt so angry and truly gutted. But there was no one to blame but myself. Even though I had been using this term for a full year and had made my mark on it, I hadn’t protected the term legally (this is something we all should learn from.) The year before, I had even published a great interview with business and branding attorney Ashley Brewer on my Forbes.com blog about not waiting to protect your intellectual property, but failed to take my own advice! Now I’ve learned. I was with Avril in Greece talking about wanting to come up with a new phrase that represented my work at its core, and Avril said, “What about ‘Finding Brave’?” And it hit me right between the eyes. Yes! That’s it. As I got thinking about bravery and what we need to cultivate in order to be our true selves powerfully and transparently, I realized It’s not about “braving up” in one isolated moment, and then falling off the brave journey. It’s about Finding Brave every week, every day, every minute. It’s a holistic, heart-and-soul journey that grabs you by the collar and won’t let go, and keeps fueling you to be and share more of yourself, in open, honest, and transformative ways. In 2018, I’ll be focusing on Finding Brave even more, from what I choose to do in my business (stretching out of my comfort zone and starting new ventures and expanding my focus), in my relationships, with how I invest my time and money to ensure growth, and in seeing my own potential more powerfully. Here are three core ways I’ll be focusing on Finding Brave in 2018 that might be of help to you in your life: Brave Sight While I have a good bit of confidence in myself and my work, I realize (if I’m really honest with myself) that I’ve hesitated moving in some new directions because of fear â€" fear of failure, fear of success and overwhelm, and even a bit of fear around how “hard” this new work will be. But my focus on Brave Sight helps me see myself in a different light â€" as someone who has reinvented herself numerous times throughout life, relished the process, and grew exponentially throughout it. I’m ready to see myself as more competent, confident and ready for more. I hope you are too. Are you ready to tap into more confidence and trust about what youre capable of? Brave Service While we hear every day (and I teach and coach) that “the riches are in the niches” â€" meaning, you need a very tight and narrow focus to be profitable in your business â€" I feel that it’s also important to be of brave service in ways that might stretch you out of your tight niche. For me, for instance, that means that I can be of help to people not only with career growth strategies but also by offering them all that I’ve learned, about psychology, marketing, client development, business growth, management, writing and thought leadership. So why wouldn’t I do that? I’m going to put a new stake in the ground in 2018 and offer more of what I’ve learned throughout my 32-year career, leveraging my corporate and marketing background, therapy training, and business development experience. I cant wait to stretch to new domains that I hope will serve others in a brave new way. What can you do in your work that will stretch you beyond how you see yourself today? Brave Love I recently divorced, and this experience has opened my eyes and my heart to so much. I’ve experienced firsthand what society views is the “right way” to live, and the negative projections other people put on you about their judgments and fears around divorce. I’ve seen too what it is to live as an independent individual outside of marriage, and how enlightening it is to begin to understand yourself more deeply in a new context of being single. I have a great deal more compassion now for single people, and the challenges we/they face in loving and accepting themselves fully when the world pressures us to see married people as the model to aspire to (even when so many marriages are miserable and harmful to the couple and to the children, and in fact should end in divorce). In 2018 I’m committed to expanding my experience of love, compassion and connection â€" with myself and with others. I’m ready to become braver in loving, and letting out into the world the most authentic, real and honest version of myself than ever before, which I hope will help others do the same. I’ve seen that when we feel forced to hide, suppress or alter our most authentic, real selves and our most loving, positive spirits in order to be accepted or appreciated â€" that’s when we suffer the most. How can you love and connect to yourself more deeply this year, and start letting out the more authentic, real version of who you are? In 2018, I hope that “finding brave” in your life will also be a theme that will pave the way for more joy, fulfillment and meaning in your life, career and relationships. Happy 2018 to you, with (brave) love. For more about Finding Brave in your life, tune into my new podcast at FindingBrave.org   starting January 4th and work with me in a Finding Brave Life Mastery program.

What to do when you are discouraged about your job search -

What to do when you are discouraged about your job search - Todays post is one of many from members of the Career Collective community I co-coordinate with my colleague Jacqui Barrett-Poindexter. I encourage you to visit other members responses, which are linked at the end of my post! Please follow our hashtag on Twitter: #careercollective. This months question? What do you do when youre really, really, really discouraged about your unsuccessful job search? How do you  overcome the negative aspects of job search? It breaks my heart when I hear from a job seeker who reaches out to me after hunting unsuccessfully for a job for months even a year or more. More often than not, it is clear to me why the persons job hunt has gone on for so long. Either the resume and job search materials are not up to par, the job seekers strategies are dated and not optimized and/or the person has simply been paralyzed by uncertainty and unable to present him or herself confidently and competently. If you have been searching unsuccessfully, it is tough not to be discouraged and give up. It takes a lot to avoid approaching with a bad attitude or a defeated outlook. However, take heart, as there are probably a lot of things that will help your prospects that you have NOT done yet! Talk to people you DONT think can help you with your search. Expand your net of networking contacts. You never know when a connector is in your midst someone who takes pride in knowing a lot of people and introducing them to each other. In a recession, it is even more important to expand our circles when  job seeking. Never underestimate the possibility for really interesting common ground.   Some of the meetings Ive  least felt like getting up at  6 a.m. to attend have been the most productive in terms of what Ive learned. Open your eyes to the opportunities!   Seek out places to meet new people.   Join an organization, a new health club or take a class.   Google networking opportunities, (your city) and see what comes up!  Ã‚  Then, dont just attend, be an active participant. Just because someone isnt in your field doesnt mean they dont have useful information for you.   (Or you for them.) Our lives intersect in so many points.   Think of someone you consider  least likely to be able to share good information with you for your search. Meet for coffee. You may be surprised! I challenge you to engage ask questionsbe able to explain who you are and what you do.  Ã‚  Dont underestimate the value of every connection.   Everyone knows someone who knows someone who knows something.  Inserting yourself as part of the chain is a great step in the right direction! Search for Companies Instead of Jobs This is crucial advice that many overlook. Instead of searching online for job descriptions of interest, start to target organizations of interest. Research them and the people who work there. Recognize that the majority of jobs are never posted they are filled via networking. So, network! Figure out who works in the places where you want to work. Infiltrate via LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and via connecting in person at events, including professional meetings and organizations. You may be surprised how easy it is to connect online and befriend people who are impressed by your interest and enthusiasm. Target Your Materials and Your Approach Have you been giving the kiss of death answer to people asking what you would like to do? I can do anything. I am flexible. I cant afford to be picky. Stop and TARGET your search. Focus your resume, your pitch and your goals and engage with people by demonstrating that you know what you offer and that you are a strong match for what the targeted job needs. If you havent started, dive into social media and Web 2.0 applications! Yes, this can take some time if you are going to do it full force. But, you have time, so go for it! Start searching for blogs in your niche. Guy Kawasakis Alltop list is a perfect place to find blogs in an array of topics, but you can certainly use Google to find current information in your field of interest. Spend some time researching and exploring. See if you can identify the stars in your field. Use online mechanisms to connect to them! How? Post smart comments on their blogs. See if they use Twitter and follow them. (Read more of my suggestions about using Twitter for the job hunt HERE.) Make sure that you are using LinkedIn effectively. You may be amazed at   how quickly you can connect and befriend people online. Consider authoring a blog. If you are a strong writer, there isnt a better way to influence your Google rankings and demonstrate authority in your subject matter. If you have the time, why not try? You have nothing to lose. Ideally, you will start a blog at www.yourname.com, but if you just want to dip your toe in the waters, consider writing for Examiner.com. I am the National Career Coach Examiner and would be happy to help you get started if you are a strong writer with a niche topic in mind. (For example, maybe you want to be the Seattle PR Examiner or the Miami Accounting Examiner. Contact me if you are interested in learning more! Stop and think about what you really want to do Use your time to assess yourself, your goals and plans for the future. How often are we forced to take a moment to really think about the future. This is your chance. Do you like the way your life is going? Are you happy with your path? If not, consider a coach to help you figure out a new direction. Learn a new skill Have you been thinking about taking a class in something that will help you with your job? Maybe youve always wanted to learn how to knit? This is a good time. Doing something new and learning a new skill is good for your attitude and will help you in multiple ways. If you can be excited about something that you can obviously control (since your job search SEEMS less control-able), it should help your outlook. There is so much information and opportunities to learn new things online for free. High-profile and talented people are offering free teleclasses, webinars and seminars all of the time. If you plug in, youll learn about these opportunities and benefit from them. Take advantage of your public library as a resource for information. Check in with the librarian for information you might be missing! Dont be afraid to pay for some great content as well! Once you know and trust a source for information, invest in yourself and your plans and learn something new. Expand Your Reading List Have you considered reading books written for the HIRING side of the desk? It could help you to know what hiring managers are thinking. Also, be sure to spend time expanding your interests and expertise. Read things that have NOTHING to do with your job hunt. Keep up to date on current events, sports, cultural arts, entertainment Volunteer Of course, no list of things to do would be complete with suggesting volunteering with an organization you support. Ive already shared great reasons to volunteer if you have some free time. You never know when you might meet someone influential for your career and/or learn and use new skills. Volunteering is an amazing opportunity to do some good while helping yourself as well! What ideas do you have? Need some help getting started with any of these ideas? Learn more about how I can help you get a job. How did members of the Career Collective respond? Heres Whats Actually Keeping Women From Getting More Money (And How to Change That)

Heres Whats Actually Keeping Women From Getting More Money (And How to Change That) For many women, money is still the ultimate taboo. And its a taboo that was called into light through a memorable anecdote shared during a panel on women, money, and power at the recent New York Timess New Rules Summit in Brooklyn. While describing moneys continued status as a contraband topic of conversation for women, Ellevest CEO Sallie Krawcheck told zu sich fellow panelist Stephanie Cohen, Chief Strategy Officer at Goldman Sachs, about a time she had to prove this point. We have made it so that we as women prefer to talk about literally anything else than money, including death, Krawcheck said. I had one woman who said, Thats not true, Sallie. And I said, Buried or cremated? She said, Buried. I said, Okay, how much did you make brde year? And she went, Uh... Weve made money this source of shame. What exactly, in 2019, allows frank conversations about money to still feel so forbidden to women? Over the course of their conversation, Krawcheck and Cohen offered up a couple of key hypotheses.Reason 1 Girls are conditioned to feel differently about money and, mora broadly, about risk-taking than boys. The way were spoken to about money when were young can have a formative influence on the way we approach it later in life, something Krawcheck testified to.In our society, I would argue that money is a male construct, she said. Boys are taught from the home to go out and make money, become the CEO, and go for it. Girls are taught to budget and be careful. This pattern is only reinforced by the messaging we receive later on in life, with characters in pop culture promoting the idea that its actually viewed as an attractive female characteristic to be bad with money, Krawcheck added. To this end, consider Carrie Bradshaw of Sex In the City fame.Shes the savviest New York woman weve ever heard of, and she couldnt afford to buy her apartment because she bought too many shoes, Krawcheck sai d, referencing a famous episode in which Bradshaw realizes shes miscalculated her shopping expenses by $36,000. She couldnt even do the math to figure it out.Reason 2 People who dont know how to have conversations about money historically make less of it.After being socially conditioned when were young to feel a certain way about money, its no surprise we carry these attitudes with us into the workforce as adults. And although Cohen was quick to point out she doesnt see gender as the single determining factor in this, adding that generational differences can also contribute to ones willingness to discuss money, she did offer an example as to how shes seen a lack of financial frankness impact earning potential.Youll have a group of people who are highly uncomfortable talking about money and never say anything about it who then after the fact will come to you and say how unhappy they are about how they were paid, Cohen said. Then youll have people who are willing to talk about it earl y and often, wrapping it into their performance and goals that type of conversation is much more constructive than being afraid to talk to your boss about money and after the fact coming back and asking for more. So, what can we do today to ensure women are equipped to advocate more money and rewire existing attitudes toward these conversations? On the organizational level, Cohen and other leaders at Goldman Sachs have rolled out a few key initiatives designed to address these issues and companies who care about advancing womens economic equality should take note. One of those initiatives, Launch With GS, includes a company commitment to invest $500 million in women-led companies and investment managers, as well as a data-driven approach to closing the gender gap in investing. We started Launch With GS because when only two percent of female founders are getting VC capital, the last time I checked, that is an amazing investment opportunity, and we invest for a living, Cohen said. We w ant to get women on the other side of the table as investors, too, because were never going to change that two percent statistic if we dont have more women where the money is.Beyond equipping women with the capital and investment power needed to open doors for other women on the global scale, Goldman Sachs has also implemented internal policies to ensure more equal advancement opportunities for its female talent. Its about getting women into the right roles early in their careers so that they can be paid well as they move up, Cohen said. Theres a lot of talk about getting women into the C-suite, and were quite focused on that, but its not just the C-suite. Its the layers below the C-suite.So, the folks at Goldman set ambitious hiring goals across the organization to bring their junior bevlkerung of analysts and associates to a ratio of 50 percent women. Though that number may sound good, Cohen said it counts for little if there arent accountability measures in place which is why Gol dman sees diversity as a key performance benchmark for its leaders. When we sit in meetings and talk to our senior leaders about how theyre doing on market share and revenues and margins, were also asking them how theyre doing on diversity, Cohen explained, adding that the results then influence compensation decisions. Well look at the normal financial metrics but were also looking at the diversity metrics, and its important that you have those conversations in the same room because they cant have a different level of importance from the geschftsleben priorities. Because diversity is a business priority.--
