Personal Branding Interview Debra Benton - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Personal Branding Interview Debra Benton - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke to Debra Benton, who is a speaker, consultant and author of the new book CEO Material: How to Be a Leader in Any Organization. In this interview, Debra talks about how you should view yourself, how to stand out as a leader, what leadership mistakes people make and the possibilities of demonstrating leadership on social networks. You say how you view yourself is how the world views you. Why is that? People figure you know yourself better than anyone. If youre confident acting they think you have reason to be. If youre timid acting they think you have reason to be. Fact is we arent always confident, for example, but a leader has to behave as if he or she is to generate confidence in others. The best view to have of yourself is to expect acceptance. That doesnt mean you are owed anything but it does mean you have a right to assume acceptance from everyone, anywhere, at any time for what you bring to the table (if youre doing good work). If you dont expect acceptance you wont get it. If you do, you might. People take you as you present yourself so I recommend you take on a calm, deliberate, pleasant demeanor of a confident, comfortable, and competent individual. How can you make yourself stand out and, in turn, get noticed as a leader? Standing out is not grandstanding, it is being willing to step up and step out and lead. First, have your focus be we not me. Look at decisions based on how it affects the team not how it affects me. Plushave an impeccable reputationget and use a global network baseget mentors; mentor othersjob hop but not too excessively.choose your bosses very carefullyget a foreign or multi-cultural assignment ASAPget a sponsor with influence who will stand up for yoube very nice to headhuntersavoid career killersand get balance because good lovers make good leaders. How can we begin to reverse the lessons learned over time about thinking critically and negatively about ourselves? At this moment in time, catch yourself when you are negative or critical and change your thought, your action, your anything.chose a productive, constructive, positive perspective its just as true as the negative one that is destructive. Catch yourself one-hundred times today if necessary, maybe it will be ninety-nine tomorrow as your optimistic, goal-achieving persona kicks in from repeated practice. Maybe ninety-eight the next day. Consistent, improved discipline is how you develop and improve. What is a common mistake people make that prevents them from becoming a leader? Thinking, acting, talking, working with an attitude of trying to be a star instead of making stars out of others. Leaders get pulled up from above as well as pushed up from below. Is it possible to demonstrate leadership qualities online in social networks? Absolutely. You have to since social media is so prevalent. Leadership is about communication giving and receiving and social networking is about communication. Every aspect of leadership (decision-making, delegating, coaching, integrity, developing successors, getting feedback, taking charge, being visible) can be done through social networking.the only thing missing from other demonstrations of leadership is the face to face and at least you have photo options! Debra Benton is an effective, charismatic and powerful speaker/consultant/author. In 1976, she founded Benton Management Resources, and has since been in business successfully for over 30 years.   Her client list reads like a “Who’s Who” in successful business today.   Benton coaches corporate executives, politicians and business leaders on their organizational impact in every industry imaginable. Manners Matter

Manners Matter Along with cursive penmanship and letter writing, formal etiquette seems to be a lost art. Do manners still matter in the age of texting and flip flops at the White House? Embed from Getty Imageswindow.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'j3aHpzNITW9JjjTN8XDXKw',sig:'Lbp6SLRdYyhMrJ_6ZKdr99cVQ6M3sDR6ot0nMGFVmvc=',w:'325px',h:'527px',items:'115338801',caption: false ,tld:'com',is360: false })}); The answer is a resounding yes, according to local author Laura Mathewson. She spent a career working in private clubs and observing etiquette â€" or its lack â€" for years. She wrote her book Bottom Line: Manners Matter in 2013 to help a generation of younger people entering the workplace. “I realized,” she says, “that many people are not aware of the right way to do things. It’s not that they don’t care; they simply don’t know.” She goes on to say that even though we’re a much more casual society than we were fifty years ago (“and that’s for the most part, a good thing”) manners are still a part of how we’re judged in social and work situations. “Your manners are an indication of your education, your sophistication, and even your attention to detail. Having great manners is certainly a way for a job applicant to stand out in a competitive field or position themselves as management material.” There are so many things you can’t control in a competitive job search: your age, your ethnicity, or who you’re competing against. But you can control how you conduct yourself in a meeting. Manners are rare enough that they will be noticed immediately. It’s a mistake to assume that etiquette makes things more complicated; good manners, Mathewson says, are designed to put everyone at ease. We will all be playing by the same rules, which helps eliminate awkwardness in social situations. In almost every business situation, she says, you should err on the side of more formal manners. You can always relax a bit if the situation calls for it, but you can’t go from sloppy to formal after making a bad first impression. If you have to remember just one thing, what’s the most important rule in business etiquette? Mathewson says it’s to take your cues from the most senior person in the room (by age or rank.) Don’t enter a room, sit down, or start eating until the most senor person does so or invites you to. (Note to senior people: “Please come in and have a seat” is your responsibility, lest the poor applicant be left standing for hours.) The universal rule in etiquette is not, as you might think, the Golden Rule: treat others as you would want to be treated. It’s actually quite different (we’ll call it the beholden rule): Treat others the way they want to be treated. Under this guidance, manners should rise to the level of the person who cares the most. Again, always start formally; you can relax based on the other person’s cue. “Please, call me Candace.” “Please, start without me; my salad will be out shortly.” One of my favorite movie scenes ever is watching Julia Roberts’ character Vivian gain confidence after being taught table etiquette by Hector Elizondo’s kindly maître d’hôtel, Barney. It’s not enough to be drop dead gorgeous, even in a romantic comedy. Learning the right way to do things gave her character the confidence to win over Richard Gere â€" and his wealthy client. If you blow it, will you know it? Sometimes. You may see a momentary flinch that will signal a gaffe on your part. But, says Laura Mathewson, if the offended party has real manners, you will never know when you’ve made a mistake. That’s why she wrote a book you can study in advance. Next: An Etiquette Quiz. Find more about Laura at her website. See my previous post on manners here.

Pioneers Have Passion, Settlers Accept Stagnation - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Pioneers Have Passion, Settlers Accept Stagnation - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Do you have passion? Do you have something you love to do or want to achieve, and you are constantly working and thinking about how to get there? Or are you marching in place, content to be in motion without actually getting anywhere in life? Ive realized over the last few years how important passion is in what I do. Passion is what helps me stay up late at night. Passion is what gets me out of the bed each morning. Its not fear. Its not habit. Its not a sense of responsibility. Its the idea that I want to accomplish certain goals, and so I do things like stay up until 2:00 a.m. writing blog posts when I should be asleep. I see people who live lives without passion. They have nothing that inspires them. They leave for work at the same time, drive the same route, and do the same job, year in and year out, because its easier than working hard. They lack drive, they lack passion. They havent set goals, and theyll never try to achieve them. They dont want More. They dont want to be better, do better, have better, or live better. They are content with Good Enough. The problem is Good Enough is deadening. It will suck the life right out of you. Once you have achieved Good Enough, theres never a reason to try to achieve More. Im not talking about being greedy or taking more than what you deserve, or sacrificing happiness for achievement. Im talking about wanting that next thing in life, whether its a promotion, or owning your own business, or even getting married and having a family. Im talking about wanting the More, and not settling for the Good Enough. So many people do that before theyve barely even started on their path. When we were kids, we heard from our parents, teachers, and even our friends that you can do Anything, be Anything, have Anything. But for many people, when they got to adulthood, reaching Good Enough was, well, good enough, and for some, that was even an uncomfortable stretch. They lost their motivation and their desire. They forgot they could be Anything, and settled for Nothing Special instead. Surround yourself with people who arent done Youre only as good as the people you surround yourself with. If you surround yourself with people who have settled for Good Enough, pretty soon theyll drag you down with the anchor of mediocrity. But if you surround yourself with people who burn with passion, youll be swept up in their energy and youll find the way to accomplish your own goals It doesnt matter if their passions are different than yours. What you want are people who love what they do, whether they love their work, or they have love a particular hobby, sideline, or collection. They could be musicians, artists, entrepreneurs, authors, or even scientists. They just have to burn with the desire to do something more than what theyre already doing. Read the books they read, attend the events they attend, introduce them to other passionate people, and learn from each other. Build a group of trusted advisors who can help steer and channel your own energies and guide you to the success you want. And if you are constantly being dragged down by the dead weight of people who are content with Good Enough, and never want More, cut them loose. If you cant get them to take the journey with you, go without them. If youre passionate about something â€" and the fact that youre reading this on a blog about making yourself better tells me you are â€" you need to align yourself with the people who can help you do it. Avoid the nay-sayers and the settlers and the members of the Church of Good Enough. Hang out with the big thinkers and the pioneers and the missionaries of More, and see where your life will take you. If you have energy and passion to do More, if youve read these last 686 words because they speak to you, then you can do Anything and be Anything you want. I believe in you. You can do this. Use These Long Summer Days To Keep Your Job Search Afloat! - Hire Imaging

Use These Long Summer Days To Keep Your Job Search Afloat! - Hire Imaging June 21st brought us the Summer Solstice, where in the Northern Hemisphere, we experienced the longest day and the shortest night of the year. It also officially marks the beginning of summer. Okay, so the long-awaited lazy days of summer are here. And its wonderful! However, it can spell D-A-N-G-E-R! In my practice, I often hear clients mutter sentiments like, Oh, why bother going full tilt in my job search now? No one is hiring; everyones on vacation or theyre thinking about heading to the golf course or lying by the pool. Is this the attitude that will serve you well? No! Wrong! Yikes! Yes, the summer months tend to slow down a bit for many. Dont get caught up in this way of thinking as a rationalization for taking time off from what should be your full-time job if youre unemployed (and at least 10 hours a week if youre employed). First, people do hire in the summer. Stay focused; and take advantage of this time! Its likely that much of your competition has just the very mentality mentioned above. This gives you an edge if youre on top of things and out there! Continue to search for opportunities; network with colleagues, acquaintances and contacts. Your due diligence cant possibly hurt! You may get more interviews than at other times of the year. In fact, according to many hiring managers and recruiters, the summer is actually one of the best times to look for work. In addition to many job seekers taking that time off (again; big mistake), there is an increase in demand for contract workers to cover vacationing workers. This is a good way to get your foot in the door for a potential full-time opportunity down the road. Secondly, youre ahead of the race. When Labor Day comes around (and your competition is thinking about getting back into the groove), guess who is already out there in full force? Guess whos been networking, setting up interviews, beefing up marketing documents? Yes, indeed; YOU! Now, Im not telling you that you should not have some summer fun a vacation if thats what suits you. The trick is to plan to work your job search and to work your plan! Pace yourself. Here are some tips to maximize your job search success this summer and still have fun: Rise early. With sunrise so early and mornings cooler than afternoons, help yourself to get up earlier. Let the sun shine through your blinds, set an extra alarm, ask someone to wake you up. Its a quiet time of day perfect for doing your internet research, setting your goals and planning your to-do list. It can also be a great time to take a walk, run, listen to birds, have that cup of coffee on the porch, or do whatever energizes you to start your day off right. Make a plan and schedule. Plan to set a schedule for yourself and stick to it. Decide how many hours each day you will devote to the search, whether two or 10 hours. Build your life into it. If you want to go to for a boat ride that evening or work in your flower garden, great! By having a schedule start and quit time, you can be productive in your job search activities without sacrificing your own summer enjoyment. Take advantage of networking opportunities. You will no doubt be outside or headed to new places at this time of the year. Be aware of making contacts wherever and whenever possible. You may be sitting by the city pool and meet someone you havent seen for ages. Thats a new contact! Maximize working in the evening. Maybe you simply arent a morning person. There are advantages to working your job search in the coolness of summer evenings. You will probably have to make compromises. Phone calls and contacts are best handled during the day. However, you can switch your planning, research, résumé tweaking and applications to the evening. And give yourself permission to enjoy an outing or event that takes you away from your usual job search schedule in the summer. Just dont let it be the norm. Your goal is to be productive, guilt free and free of resentment! This is about balance. Work and play! Youll be happy with the results!

My Theme For 2018 Might Be Helpful In Your Life As Well - Kathy Caprino

My Theme For 2018 Might Be Helpful In Your Life As Well Part of Kathys series Finding Brave To Build a Better Life Every year at this time, I love to identify a “theme” for the coming year â€" a word or phrase that represents what I want to cultivate more of in my life, work, relationships, and in the world directly around me. I’ve found that what we focus on truly expands, so focusing on an exciting and meaningful new element in my life brings it closer to me, and in greater abundance. My theme for 2018 is “finding brave.” It’s amazing that, from the minute these two little words came into my sphere (and I thank my dear friend and author Avril McDonald for that), I’ve truly experienced more bravery, resilience, strength and hope, and I can see more clearly how I’m on the Finding Brave path. I remember just when this term was birthed. It was in Mykonos, Greece this past September, while I was co-hosting a women’s retreat Light From the Dawn with Avril, Miisa Mink, Kaisa Peltola, and  Charlotte Gillbanks. For the past year, I had been using the term “Brave Up” extensively in my work, writing, TEDx talk and other places. But in September as I was working on launching my new podcast (hope youll check it out on January 4th), I discovered that someone had trademarked the term. I felt so angry and truly gutted. But there was no one to blame but myself. Even though I had been using this term for a full year and had made my mark on it, I hadn’t protected the term legally (this is something we all should learn from.) The year before, I had even published a great interview with business and branding attorney Ashley Brewer on my Forbes.com blog about not waiting to protect your intellectual property, but failed to take my own advice! Now I’ve learned. I was with Avril in Greece talking about wanting to come up with a new phrase that represented my work at its core, and Avril said, “What about ‘Finding Brave’?” And it hit me right between the eyes. Yes! That’s it. As I got thinking about bravery and what we need to cultivate in order to be our true selves powerfully and transparently, I realized It’s not about “braving up” in one isolated moment, and then falling off the brave journey. It’s about Finding Brave every week, every day, every minute. It’s a holistic, heart-and-soul journey that grabs you by the collar and won’t let go, and keeps fueling you to be and share more of yourself, in open, honest, and transformative ways. In 2018, I’ll be focusing on Finding Brave even more, from what I choose to do in my business (stretching out of my comfort zone and starting new ventures and expanding my focus), in my relationships, with how I invest my time and money to ensure growth, and in seeing my own potential more powerfully. Here are three core ways I’ll be focusing on Finding Brave in 2018 that might be of help to you in your life: Brave Sight While I have a good bit of confidence in myself and my work, I realize (if I’m really honest with myself) that I’ve hesitated moving in some new directions because of fear â€" fear of failure, fear of success and overwhelm, and even a bit of fear around how “hard” this new work will be. But my focus on Brave Sight helps me see myself in a different light â€" as someone who has reinvented herself numerous times throughout life, relished the process, and grew exponentially throughout it. I’m ready to see myself as more competent, confident and ready for more. I hope you are too. Are you ready to tap into more confidence and trust about what youre capable of? Brave Service While we hear every day (and I teach and coach) that “the riches are in the niches” â€" meaning, you need a very tight and narrow focus to be profitable in your business â€" I feel that it’s also important to be of brave service in ways that might stretch you out of your tight niche. For me, for instance, that means that I can be of help to people not only with career growth strategies but also by offering them all that I’ve learned, about psychology, marketing, client development, business growth, management, writing and thought leadership. So why wouldn’t I do that? I’m going to put a new stake in the ground in 2018 and offer more of what I’ve learned throughout my 32-year career, leveraging my corporate and marketing background, therapy training, and business development experience. I cant wait to stretch to new domains that I hope will serve others in a brave new way. What can you do in your work that will stretch you beyond how you see yourself today? Brave Love I recently divorced, and this experience has opened my eyes and my heart to so much. I’ve experienced firsthand what society views is the “right way” to live, and the negative projections other people put on you about their judgments and fears around divorce. I’ve seen too what it is to live as an independent individual outside of marriage, and how enlightening it is to begin to understand yourself more deeply in a new context of being single. I have a great deal more compassion now for single people, and the challenges we/they face in loving and accepting themselves fully when the world pressures us to see married people as the model to aspire to (even when so many marriages are miserable and harmful to the couple and to the children, and in fact should end in divorce). In 2018 I’m committed to expanding my experience of love, compassion and connection â€" with myself and with others. I’m ready to become braver in loving, and letting out into the world the most authentic, real and honest version of myself than ever before, which I hope will help others do the same. I’ve seen that when we feel forced to hide, suppress or alter our most authentic, real selves and our most loving, positive spirits in order to be accepted or appreciated â€" that’s when we suffer the most. How can you love and connect to yourself more deeply this year, and start letting out the more authentic, real version of who you are? In 2018, I hope that “finding brave” in your life will also be a theme that will pave the way for more joy, fulfillment and meaning in your life, career and relationships. Happy 2018 to you, with (brave) love. For more about Finding Brave in your life, tune into my new podcast at FindingBrave.org   starting January 4th and work with me in a Finding Brave Life Mastery program.
